The next generation in gaming is finally here and it's the Xbox 360 Kinect. After years of development of what was originally called Project Natal and with its brand new name, Kinect is set to take the gaming world by storm. But what is it that makes Microsoft's new baby the must have Christmas toy for 2010?
There's no doubt that gaming is big business and developers are always looking for new and innovative ways to improve the game play. From the very basic beginnings of green and grey square blocks on a screen that you could play simple tennis right up to the incredible HD graphics of modern warfare games we've had to use hand held controllers. Now with Xbox 360 Kinect there are no controllers - you are the controller!
The problem with gaming and gamers in particular is that it is so addictive and time consuming we've all become the stereo-typical "couch potato!" Hours and hours are eaten up glued to the screen trying to get to that all important next level. But now with Kinect Xbox 360 we can get off the couch, get on our feet and really have some fun. Every movement you make is picked up by the main system sensor and you are just one big controller. It even has voice recognition!
So how does Kinect work?
1 - In simple terms, the Xbox Kinect has technology that allows its sensor to see the room in 3D.
2 - It has an RGB camera that delivers the basic 3 colour components (Red, Green, and Blue) which it uses for facial recognition and various other tasks
3 - It has what's known as a Multi Array Microphone. This allows it remove ambient noises and pick up and recognise your voice by sound.
4 - Kinect has a custom processor that through a specific Microsoft software layer gives it the ability to recognise a human body or more specifically - You!
From its original concept of Project Natal for the Xbox 360 the new Kinect system really is an incredible gaming innovation. With the concept of your whole body being the controller, health conscious parents who are worried that their kids are just slumped on the couch playing games for hours on end getting no exercise whatsoever can stop worrying.
